Long before punk’d became a verb with a hip spelling, self-styled, professional prankster Alan Abel was pulling the legs of the unsuspecting. Be it his fictitious Society for Indecency to Naked Animals or golf-course dance instruction to corporate executives in ballet positions promised to ratchet up their golf scores, Abel has been leading the way to his provocative punch lines for nearly six decades.
The incorrigible provocateur, writer, actor, musician, comedian, filmmaker, lecturer, and public interest champion is coming to DePaul University for a series of special events that will let you in on the man behind the many masks.
Come to a screening and Q&A of the film, Abel Raises Cain on Wednesday, March 2, 6:30 p.m. in room 108 of McGowan Hall South, located at 1110 W. Belden Ave. This event is free and open to the public.
On Thursday, March 3, at 6:30 p.m. the public is invited to attend a rare workshop on the art of devising and carrying out a media hoax. This interactive plot/workshop will introduce the audience to the art of the hoax and provide a unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to brainstorm and work with the master of allegorical satire, Alan Abel. Thursday’s meeting will be used to collectively develop and refine the premise of the hoax, which will be carried out at high noon on Friday, March 4th (location of actual hoax to be shared secretly with workshop participants on the night of March 3rd). Workshop participants are encouraged to attend and promote Friday’s hijinks, but it is not required.
