Alan Abel Exhibit at the Velveteria in Los Angeles

Do you live near Los Angeles? Have you ever heard of the Velveteria? How appropriate that the Weird World of Alan Abel is now on display at "one of the World's Strangest Museums" according to Travel and Leisure magazine!

The lewd horse that symbolized the prudent efforts of the Society for Indecency to Naked Animals to clothe every naked horse, cat, dog and cow, is now a celebrated work on black velvet with its own humorous twist at this quirky art museum.

The following is one of thousands of velvet paintings owned by Carl and Caren at the Velveteria and this one is obviously a tribute to the naked horse in shorts. But this beast happens to be a unicorn and his underwear is a little more... colorful.

Here is a sneak peak of a couple other Alan Abel paintings on display...

So whether you enjoy the magic of velvet paintings or not, this place is extraordinary. Please go check it out!! The Velveteria was recently profiled in the LA Times.

Special thanks to Carl Baldwin and Caren Anderson for putting together this Alan Abel prank exhibit!

Abel Raises Cain Screening at the 2015 Collinsville Film Festival

We just moved from Brooklyn, NY to a small Connecticut arts-oriented community and we're excited (maybe a little nervous) to share the film with our new neighbors and friends. Hopefully the nudity @ around 45 minutes into the picture will not be too offensive on a Sunday. I'm promising everyone that if they don’t laugh at least once, I will give them their money back. So here are the details...

ABEL RAISES CAIN is screening at the Collinsville Film Festival on Sunday, May 17, 2015 @ 1:30PM at the Canton Town Hall auditorium (4 Market Street, Collinsville, CT 06022). Tickets are $10.00 either in advance online via this link: Collinsville Film Festival Tickets or cash at the door.

For anyone who has just stumbled upon our obscure documentary, ABEL RAISES CAIN toured the international film fest circuit after winning the Grand Jury Prize at Slamdance in 2005. The movie is a comical portrait of my father, Alan Abel, the infamous media hoaxer. He is best-known for his campaign to clothe all naked animals for the sake of decency in the late 50s/early 60s, a zany cause that hoodwinked even Walter Cronkite, the most trusted newsman in America. The satirical crusade’s motto was, “A nude horse is a rude horse.” A silly idea that caught like wildfire, news of the phony organization landed the front pages of newspapers across America and around the globe. His pranking career pretty much took off from there. My mother was his partner in crime and they led a fun life together. But my dad never made any money, so his ‘success’ is bittersweet.

If you like Andy Kaufman, the Yes Men, Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert, my father was doing their shticks way before they were even born! So if you've never heard of Alan Abel, come on down to Town Hall in Collinsville, CT on Sunday afternoon (5/17 @ 1:30) to see the screening! It's fun to experience it with a crowd in a public setting. My husband, Jeff, and I produced and directed the documentary together and we'll be doing a Q&A with the audience afterwards. You never know, there may be a couple of surprise visitors there who like to sneak in after the show starts.
